Ole Miss will be latest SEC school to sell beer at games
OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — The University of Mississippi will become the latest university nationwide to sell beer at athletic events.
Ole Miss announced Friday that it would begin selling beer at football games beginning Oct. 19. The university also says it will sell beer at men’s and women’s basketball games and baseball games.
The Southeastern Conference, including Ole Miss, lifted its ban on alcohol sales at athletic events earlier this year.
University Police Chief Ray Hawkins says he hopes beer sales will reduce pregame binge drinking and sneaking alcohol into games, lessening drunken behavior.
Ole Miss says it wants to wait until Oct. 19 to begin sales to prepare and learn from beer sales elsewhere.
The University of Southern Mississippi has announced beer sales, but Mississippi State University indicates it’s staying dry for now.
