Winter of 1948-1949 featured in Nebraska Life Magazine
NORFOLK - Nebraskans who survived the fierce winter of 1948-1949 share their stories in the January/February issue of Nebraska Life magazine.
Editor Alan Bartels wrote the five page feature looking at the 70th anniversary of the storms.
Bartels says he traveled around the state talking with those who lived through the epic winter.
“In Norfolk I met with some residents at the Meadows, and one lady from Pierce was talking about how beautiful the weather was and they were out hunting some pheasants, then stopped at a local bar for a drink and when they came out winter had arrived.”
Bartels says Nebraskans had snow until July of 1949, and 20 Nebraskans perished as a result and thousands of livestock animals were lost.
