Louisiana St. 54, Purdue 53
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) _ Dana Chatman scored five of the Louisiana State’s last six points to lead the unranked Tigers back from a 14-point deficit and past No. 15 Purdue 54-53 Sunday in a Midwest regional second round game of the women’s NCAA basketball tournament.
Patricia Woods added 11 points and DeeDee Franklin had 11 rebounds as the Tigers, 19-10, advanced to the regional final Thursday against the winner of Sunday’s Oklahoma State-Louisiana Tech game. Purdue ended its season 24-6.
Jill Sauer scored Purdue’s last point with a free throw that made it 53-48 with 3:16 remaining. Chatman, who scored 14 of her 20 points in the second half, then hit a 3-pointer and Barbara Henderson added a free throw to make it 53-52 with 1:34 left.
Chatman made a running 12-footer in the lane with 36 seconds left for the game-winner. MaChelle Joseph, who led Purdue with 14 points, missed a 15- footer with 26 seconds left but then fouled Franklin as she grabbed the rebound.
Franklin missed the free throw, but the rebound went out of bounds and LSU got the ball to hold on to the victory with six seconds left.
Purdue led 27-20 at halftime and built the advantage to 41-27 with 11:15 remaining. Woods then scored four points and LSU eight of the next 10 to make it 45-35. A seven-point LSU run in which Chatman had a 3-pointer and two free throws made it 47-44 with 5:11 left in the game.
