You Won’t Find DeMarre Carroll of the Brooklyn Nets in Sweats
DeMarre Carroll, 31, is a forward for the Brooklyn Nets. Raised in Birmingham, Alabama, and currently living in Brooklyn and Atlanta, Carroll is known for his bright shirts and colorful ensembles off the court. “Growing up, my mother always used to put us in loud sweatsuits and everything matched down to the shoes,” he said. “It’s still with me. I have to match from head to toe.” Here are some favorites from his closet.
I’m more a fitted button-down type of guy. I like those by Dolce & Gabbana because they fit me. I’m 6-foot-8, and the new trend now is a snug fit that’s a little short — it’s European cut — so I can buy off the rack. As for colors and patterns, most people would say that I’m a vibrant guy with loud colors and things that catch the eye. That’s always been my style.
With my jeans, I’m actually more subtle. One of the best brands that fit me is JBrand. I usually wear dark blue and black, definitely slim fit. I don’t go crazy. My shoes and my shirt really do most of the justice for me.
I have two fur coats from this Canadian brand called Hiso. They reached out because of my Instagram account. It’s always because of Instagram now. If you don’t have a certain look, people won’t approach you. The coats: One is black with gray and white, and the other one is in dark brown. I have zero clue what kind of fur it is, but it gives me one of those “I’m in the room” kind of looks. I love that.
I’m always dressed like I’m going to see my worst enemy, even if I’m just going to the arena for practice. When I step out of the house, I would want to run into the guy who hated me my whole lifetime and it would be, “Look at me now.”
Right now, my favorites are Dolce & Gabbanas and Louboutins. Dolce & Gabbana — they’re not the dress-up ones. They’re a cleaned-up sneaker with patches and things on them. They have a clubby kind of look. The Louboutins — I’m actually going real subtle with them now. I want to go away from the allover studded ones because a bunch of people started wearing them. That’s when I have to stop. I want to keep people guessing. I want people to think, “He doesn’t just do the norm.”
I’m an accessories guy. I like the bracelets, the watch, the necklace. I’m from the South. When I put the accessories on, sometimes people ask, “DeMarre Carroll, are you a rapper?”
My favorite pieces are these Gucci bracelets. I was in the Gucci store with my wife. I saw these bracelets in the women’s section. I said, “Hey, will those fit on me?,” and they did. Since then, every guy and my teammates have gone into Gucci to look for them and come back and told me they couldn’t find them. I would be like, “I don’t know, maybe they sold out.” I didn’t tell them they were from the women’s section.
