PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ La Salle got 27 points from freshman Donnie Carr as the Explorers beat American 75-59 on Tuesday.

Carr, who is the leading scorer in the Atlantic 10 Conference with a 30.3 points per game average, was strong both inside and outside for the Explorers. The 6-2 guard was 5-for-9 from 3-point range.

La Salle used two major runs in the contest to pull away. In the first half, the Explorers went on a 16-5 spurt to open up a double-digit lead. Then, after the Eagles pulled to within four with 12:50 left in the second half, La Salle rolled off a 13-1 run to reinforce its lead.

Travar Johnson, another freshman, added 14 points and 13 rebounds for La Salle, career highs in both categories. Mike Gizzi was also in double figures for the Explorers with 12 points.

American was led by Thomas Treadwell’s 19 points, while Nathan Smith had 13 points and Dave Small 12.

The win was La Salle’s first at its new home court, the Corestates Spectrum, their third different home arena in six years. The Explorers spent the last five years at the Civic Center and at the Palestra before that.
