Volleyball: Hargrave’s playoff run continues with sweep of Sweeny
After one of the Sweeny players hit the ball into the net, giving Hargrave the victory, the celebration was muted.
The Hargrave Lady Falcons swept the Sweeny Lady Bulldogs 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-25) on Thursday evening, Nov. 1 at the Phillips Field House in Pasadena, but senior Skylar Nappier said the mood in the locker room after the game was reserved.
“We don’t usually play like that, but it was just nice to have a win and to continue on in the playoffs,” she said.
Hargrave fell behind 0-3 and 4-9 early in the first set, but the Lady Falcons sided out after a kill from senior Casey Warren and rode that momentum to a score the final six points of the first set. Three of those points came on aces from Warren. Junior Kylie Willis had the final kill.
The Lady Falcons fell behind 0-2 in the second set. They scored the final three points of the set off kills from senior Saylor Boss and Nappier.
Nappier admitted that she was feeling a lot of pressure but said she tries to put that pressure into the ball when she swings at it.
Hargrave led 10-8 midway through the third set. It took them three match points to win.
“I think we came out underestimating our opponent and not ready, we were not focused,” coach Tammy White said.
She acknowledged that the team struggled early and emphasized the importance of a strong start.
“You want to come out strong, and you want to come out with your guard up,” she said. “You want to establish dominance as quickly as possible.”
Nappier finished the match with 10 kills.
Hargrave will play District 22-4A champion Hamshire-Fannett, who swept Columbia on Monday night, in the regional quarterfinals at Barbers Hill on Monday, Nov. 5.
“Just going all out in practice, 100%, 110% actually, just going all out and doing our best to get better,” is how Nappier said the team is going to ensure that they come out much stronger.
