Prep bowling: Winona JV Black wins state title
Winona’s junior varsity Black team surprised the field Sunday to win the state championship at the Minnesota High School State Junior Varsity Tournament at Concord Lanes in South St. Paul.
The Black team qualified fourth after the first round, then went into the final eight as the top seed. They defeated Fergus Falls by three pins in the two-game total-pins title match.
Members of the Black team include Sam Spring, Ilea Stone, Samantha Wangen, Madeline Andring and Mitchell Koehler. They are coached by Bob Prenot.
The Winona JV Orange team, which won the last two state titles, failed to get out of the opening round.
On Saturday at the state varsity tournament at Flaherty’s in Arden Hills, Winona placed sixth in the 24-team field. They were the eighth seed for the finals and lost to top-ranked St. Croix Lutheran in the first round. Winona lost by 11 pins to Stewartville in the fifth-place match.
Fergus Falls won the varsity tournament.
