Governor-elect picks tourism secretary
Gov.-elect Michelle Lujan Grisham named the former head of the New Mexico Hospitality Association on Thursday to lead her Tourism Department.
Jen Schroer will take over the agency as outgoing Gov. Susana Martinez touts growing numbers of visitors flocking to the state and as communities continue to look to outdoor recreation as well as the arts as attractions to help diversify local economies.
The appointment marks a return to New Mexico for Schroer. She led the New Mexico Hospitality Association from late 2014 up until March, when she left to work with the chamber of commerce in Davis, Calif. Schroer previously worked inside the Tourism Department as director of strategic partnerships.
The Democratic governor-elect also named retired Brig. Gen. Judy Griego to lead the Department of Veteran Services. The first woman ever promoted to brigadier general in the New Mexico National Guard, Griego retired from her post in 2016 after 36 years.
She will take over an agency responsible for handling state benefits as well as long-term care for many New Mexican veterans.
And Lujan Grisham tapped W. Scott Carreathers to lead the state Office of African American Affairs. He is currently director of African American Student Services at the University of New Mexico.
