The Back Mountain Chamber’s Cultural Event Committee hosted its fourth annual musical showcase recently. More than 300 guests enjoyed the music of Jimmy and the Parrots, a Jimmy Buffett tribute band from the New York/New Jersey area. The band, led by Jimmy Maraventano, has performed throughout the United States and the Caribbean. The cultural committee selected Eddie Day Pashinski as its special honoree this year. As a member of the Star Fires, which was organized in the late 1950s, they made several recordings, including “You’ve Done Me Wrong.” Many popular recording artists played with the Star Fires over the years at the former Hanson’s Amusement Park at Harveys Lake, including Chubby Checker, The McCoys, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Patti and the Emblems, Bobby Goldsboro, Freddie Cannon, the Shangri-Las, and others. Cindy Post Mitchell, event co-chair, said in a prepared release, “We honored Eddie for his outstanding contribution to providing music in our area over the years.” As in previous years, a basket raffle was held with gifts donated by local Chamber members and businesses. More than $1,200 was raised. This year’s raffle proceeds are being donated to the 1st Lt. Michael J. Cleary Memorial Fund. The Dallas native and first lieutenant was killed in Iraq on Dec. 20, 2005, while serving during Operation Iraqi Freedom. This fund honors the memory of and advances causes in the community that Cleary believed in and supported.
