Brewers vs. Dodgers: Thursday game report
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
■ The combination of having an eight-man relief corps, recent off days and an eight-inning start Wednesday night by Junior Guerra gave manager Craig Counsell a well-rested bullpen for the series finale against the Dodgers on Thursday. And it was a good thing because he used five relievers to cover the final 42/3 innings of the 8-1 loss.
That was a turnabout after a tough nine-game trip through California in which high-leverage relievers were used often and closer Jeremy Jeffress was unavailable for a few days with an eye infection.
“We’re to the point where I’m almost trying to get guys in a game,” Counsell said before the game.
■ Class AAA Colorado Springs shortstop Orlando Arcia, catcher Manny Pina and reliever Damien Magnifico were named to the Pacific Coast League all-star team.
■ Counsell takes some home/away splits with a grain of salt, but it’s impossible not to notice how much better centerfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis and first baseman Chris Carter are doing at Miller Park. Entering Thursday, Carter had 14 of his 19 home runs at home with a .607 slugging percentage, compared to .364 on the road. Nieuwenhuis had a .314 batting average and .949 OPS at home and a .131 batting average and .506 OPS on the road.
“There are a ton of numbers out there,” Counsell said. “We can find a split (on everything), like we haven’t been good on Mondays (1-6). You’ve got to make sure which (numbers) you can use and which ones are going to ‘normalize’ themselves. Players are going to have seasons like that.”
■Ryan Braun extended his hitting streak to 11 games, during which he is batting .409 (18 for 44) with five doubles, a triple, two homers and eight RBI.
