Ex-Pilots Coach, AD Negratti Dies
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) _ Former University of Portland basketball coach and athletic director Al Negratti has died of cancer at age 76.
Negratti died Monday at his home in Green Bay, Wis.
He coached the Pilots from 1955 to 1967, compiling 165 victories. In 1958-59, Portland’s first season at the NCAA Division I level, Negratti’s team reached the NCAA tournament. Portland never made it to the tournament again until 1995-96.
Negratti was Portland’s athletic director from 1957 to 1969. He later was athletic director at State University of New York-New Paltz, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, U.S. Maritime Academy, California-Santa Barbara and UNLV. His final job was athletic director at St. Norbert College from 1981 until his retirement in 1989.
Negratti also coached high school basketball in Oregon at Lakeview and Cleveland high schools.
He played basketball for Seton Hall and later with the Rochester Royals of the NBA.
Negratti is survived by his wife, Alice, and six children. A memorial service is planned Friday in Green Bay.
