Actor Edward James Olmos is accused of sexual assault

December 10, 1997

ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) _ A woman has accused former ``Miami Vice″ star Edward James Olmos of sexually assaulting her at a motel.

No charges have been filed against the Emmy-winning actor, and police still are investigating the woman’s claim, Capt. Charles Cabaniss said.

Olmos, 50, denied the allegations through his lawyer, who said the woman had stalked Olmos and sought a financial settlement.

The 38-year-old woman said she was assaulted on Oct. 19. Olmos was in Rock Hill for a lecture at Winthrop University.

After the lecture, she followed Olmos to a reception at the college president’s house, a restaurant and his motel, said Olmos’ lawyer, Richard Harpootlian.

``She was there waiting on him the next morning,″ Harpootlian said. ``Nothing happened that night, and whatever occurred the next day would be considered consensual, and we’re not conceding anything happened.″

He said she asked for a financial settlement but wouldn’t say how much she requested.

``We don’t plan on paying her a dime,″ he said

Olmos did not return calls to his production company, publicist and agent in Los Angeles.

Calls to the woman’s lawyers were not immediately returned. A woman at the address on the police report refused to talk to a reporter Tuesday.

``There’s no one here by that name,″ she said.
