Man arrested in rape case at Provo residence
Provo Police arrested a man on suspicion of rape following a reported incident at a west Provo residence early Sunday.
Police officers were contacted by a 19-year-old woman who reported that she was raped at a residence, according to police reports.
The investigating officer spoke with the woman at Utah Valley Hospital. The woman said she and Joshua Jarold Edwards, 28, had been drinking alcohol before she fell asleep in the living room. Edwards reportedly carried the woman to his room and removed her clothes.
The woman said that she told Edwards to stop and tried pushing him away, reports state. The woman said she was in and out of consciousness as Edwards reportedly assaulted her. The incident reportedly ended when she said she needed to vomit and left the room.
Officers detained Edwards and escorted him to the Provo Police Department. After being advised of his Miranda rights, Edwards initially told officers that he had been drinking and sitting around the home, reports state. After additional questions, he reportedly said he had been drinking with the woman and they had been making out.
Edwards reportedly said they went to his room where the woman consented to oral sex and the contact ended when the woman threw up.
Edwards reportedly told officers that the woman was heavily intoxicated after drinking alcohol and during the incident in the bedroom. When officers asked Edwards to elaborate on the state of the woman’s intoxication, the man asked for an attorney.
Police arrested Edwards on suspicion of first-degree felony counts of rape and forcible sodomy.
