New award program for young community leaders in WV launches
CHARLESTON — Generation West Virginia (“GWV”) and the One Foundation are announcing the launch of the West Virginia Beacon Awards, an awards program designed to recognize, support, and connect young “doers” across the Mountain State who are working for the betterment of their communities.
Across the state, the next generation is stepping up to build a more equitable and thriving West Virginia. Every day, young West Virginians are dedicating themselves to the transformational work of revitalizing their communities: young artists are creating new hope, young entrepreneurs are building new opportunity, and young leaders are sharing new visions.
The Beacon Awards recognize young leaders who are leaning in to existing challenges, digging into possible solutions, and turning their ideas into action.
The awards program is presented in partnership by two organizations: the One Foundation nurtures grassroots transformation in communities across the coalfields of Central Appalachia and beyond to spur a more diverse, sustainable, and inclusive economy; and Generation West Virginia is the statewide organization dedicated to attracting, retaining, and advancing young talent.
In June of 2019, the West Virginia Beacon Awards will select six final nominees to be considered for awards.
The Selection Committee will award two leaders with a monetary award of $3,000 each to support their work. The remaining four Beacon Awards Finalists will be recognized with a monetary award of $1,000 each.
The selection process for the Beacon Awards is guided by four principles that are attributed to the work and qualities of the nominees.
Nominees should be locally-focused, possess a social entrepreneurial spirit, reflect generous leadership, and their work should be making actionable impact.
As a nomination only awards program, the Beacon Awards are designed to highlight those who may be overlooked by existing awards programs.
This is an opportunity to highlight young people who are working behind the scenes, who are the backbone of a community, and who understand that solutions must come from the ground up.
