King Reportedly To Make Nazer Permanent Oil Minister
DHAHRAN, Saudi Arabia (AP) _ King Fahd plans to soon promote Hisham Nazer from acting oil minister to permanent oil minister, Arab diplomatic sources and the Qatar News Agency said Tuesday.
The sources, who declined to be identified, said the monarch commended Nazer Tuesday during a refinery inauguration ceremony in the industrial city of Jubail.
The official Qatar News Agency reported that a royal decree naming the 54- year-old Nazer as permanent oil minister was expected soon.
Nazer, who is also planning minister, was named acting oil minister on Oct. 30 when the king stripped Ahmed Zaki Yamani of the oil portfolio.
Sources quoted Fahd as saying at the refinery inauguration ceremony: ″Nazer is oil minister and acting planning minister and not the other way around.″
Nazer made his debut on the world oil stage in Geneva earlier this month at the ministerial conference of the 13-nation Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries.
The U.S.-educated Nazer was instrumental in arranging an accord on lowering OPEC’s oil production from about 17 million barrels a day to 15.8 million. The cartel hopes to dry up the world oil glut and raise oil prices.
