Island Cyclone Kills Two
PORT LOUIS, Mauritius (AP) _ A cyclone whipped through the Indian Ocean island of Reunion, killing two people and leaving more than 600 homeless on the French possession, Mauritius state radio said Sunday.
At least 100 homes were destroyed, and electrical supply was cut to 40,000 homes when Cyclone Connie hit Reunion on Saturday with 95 mph winds, the report said.
France, which has military outposts on the island, has sent support to assist in repairing the damage, the report said.
It was not clear how the two people on the island of 620,000 people were killed.
The storm bypassed the neighboring island of Mauritius, 140 miles northeast of Reunion. However, one man who had climbed onto his roof to fix his antenna fell to his death amid heavy winds and rains there, the radio said.
