Major change for busy street in downtown Savannah
SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — A busy street that routes visitors into the historic heart of Georgia’s oldest city is undergoing a big change.
Montgomery Street in Savannah’s downtown historic district has been a one-way route since 1967, when Interstate 16 opened and used the road to funnel traffic into the downtown area.
A reconfigured Montgomery Street opened to two-way traffic on Thursday. City traffic engineers redesigned the street to give drivers easier access to the new Savannah Cultural Arts Center that’s scheduled to open this spring.
City officials took care not to make any sudden changes to traffic patterns. New traffic signals, road striping, signs and other changes were installed to accommodate two-way traffic. And digital message boards were placed along Montgomery Street in advance to give drivers a heads-up.
