Autopsy confirms Sandy Hook father died by suicide
NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) — An autopsy has confirmed that the father of a victim of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut took his own life.
The Hartford Courant reports that the state’s chief medical examiner confirmed Wednesday that Jeremy Richman died by suicide.
The 49-year-old neuroscientist was found dead Monday inside a Newtown community event center where he had an office.
His daughter Avielle was among the 20 children and six educators killed by a gunman on Dec. 14, 2012, at the school in Newtown.
Richman and his wife launched The Avielle Foundation in the months after the shooting to try to prevent similar tragedies by promoting research into brain pathologies and violence.
The work had made him a prominent advocate nationally on the issue of gun violence.
