Man shot in leg during robbery
NEW HAVEN — Police are looking for someone who shot a man at Liberty and Portsea Streets Sunday night.
Police said the call came in at 9:23 p.m. When they arrived, officers reportedly found a man who had been shot in his leg. The 50-year-old victim was brought to the hospital.
Police said the victim told them he’d been walking in the area and spotted his assailant pacing him on the opposite side of the street. The man reportedly approached the victim and pulled out a semi-automatic handgun. Police said the suspect demanded the victim hand over his valuables. The victim reached into his pocket and pulled a knife, the robber allegedly ordered him to drop the knife. Police said the suspect fired a shot that hit the victim in the leg. The victim reportedly dropped his cash to the ground and the suspect allegedly picked most of it up and took off running.
Police said they found some ballistic evidence, a couple hundred in cash and the victim’s knife at the scene. The victim is recovering. He described the gunman as a dark-complexioned black man in his middle 20s to early 30s. He had on eyeglasses and wore a brown (or similarly colored) hooded jacket. He stands about 5 feet, 9 inches.
