Greek league resumes in front of empty stands
ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Asteras beat Atromitos 1-0 and Ergotelis won by the same score at Giannena in the two Greek league games played on Saturday after a one-week suspension of activity.
Front-runner Olympiakos’ game at Panthrakikos never started because of a waterlogged pitch. The game has been postponed indefinitely, because the stadium’s drainage system was destroyed during the building of a new stand.
The league and the government agreed that this weekend’s round would be played in front of empty stands following serious incidents two weeks ago in the Panathinaikos vs Olympiakos game, including numerous flares thrown into the field and two pitch invasions. Panathinaikos won 2-1 but was later docked the three points for the incidents.
