DETROIT (AP) _ Backup goalie Norm Maracle won his fourth straight start and Stacy Roest scored his first NHL goal as the Detroit Red Wings beat the San Jose Sharks 4-1 Sunday.

Uwe Krupp, Martin Lapointe and Darren McCarty also scored for the Red Wings, who have won five straight after losing six of their previous eight.

Maracle stopped 19 shots to cap off a homestand sweep which also included Anaheim, Vancouver and San Jose. In the four games, he yielded only four goals. He was only 2:30 away from his first shutout when Jeff Norton scored for the Sharks.

Maracle, 6-0-1 in the NHL, is perfect since replacing Chris Osgood, who is sidelined with a hip flexor.

San Jose goalie Mike Vernon, who won the Conn Smythe Trophy for Detroit when the Red Wings took the 1997 Stanley Cup, had 24 saves.

Roest, a rookie, scored 5:23 into the third period on a slapshot that deflected off Vernon.

Goals by Krupp and Lapointe gave the Red Wings a 2-0 lead after one period. Krupp scored after Steve Yzerman clanged a shot off the left post on a breakaway. The puck came to Krupp at the right point, and his shot dribbled past Vernon at 6:50.

Lapointe got open in front of the net and converted a pass from Brendan Shanahan with one second remaining on a 5-on-3 advantage at 16:11.

McCarty made it 3-0 with another power-play goal only 19 seconds into the second period on a backhander from the left circle.
