Coal truck overturns, closing Route 30 for part of the day

Route 30 from Johnson Bottom Road to Ridge Road was closed for nearly eight hours Monday after a coal truck overturned, according to a Pennsylvania Department of Transportation official.

The accident happened around 5:17 a.m. in Shade Township, according to Somerset County Control. It was not clear if the driver was hurt or what caused the accident, according to a state police dispatcher.

A PennDOT crew stayed at the scene long after the state police finished gathering information for their investigation into the accident, Somerset County Maintenance Manger Joe Kelemen said in a telephone interview Monday.

“The road will remain closed because of the amount of fuel oil on the highway,” he said earlier in the day. “We are drying it up so there will be no problems.”

A state police report was not available. The Stoystown and Hooversville fire departments and Somerset Area Ambulance Service were also dispatched.
