August 25, 2018 GMT

MONTROSE — Behind a strong two-pronged rushing attack from quarterback Shane Fuhrey and running back Trent Nickeson, Wyalusing rolled to a 52-6 win over Montrose in a nonconference game Friday at Ambrose Mullen Memorial Stadium. The pair combined for 246 yards rushing and Fuhrey scored three touchdowns for the Rams. In the first quarter, Wyalusing capitalized on a short field after a fumble gave the Rams the ball at Montrose’s 27. Nickeson had a 20-yard run on the four-play drive that Fuhrey capped with a 7-yard touchdown run to give Wyalusing a 6-0 lead. On Wyalusing’s next drive, Chucky Rohan intercepted a pass and returned it to the Rams’ 47. But Wyalusing’s defense held and stopped the Meteors on fourth down. On the Rams’ first play from scrimmage on their ensuing drive, Nickeson ripped off a 64-yard run down to the Meteors’ 3-yard-line. Fuhrey ran it in on the next play and Wyalusing led 14-0 after a two-point conversion run. Montrose fumbled away the next kickoff and the Rams took over at the Meteors’ 20. Three plays later, Brandon Dake scored on a 6-yard run and a two-point conversion gave Wyalusing a 22-0 lead. The Meteors put together one of their best drive of the game on their next possession, going 54 yards in nine plays. Ethan Cina gained 43 yards on a quick quarterback sneak up the middle and also connected on a 6-yard pass to Cameron Harder but the drive stalled at the Wyalusing 8-yard-line when the Rams forced an incompletion on fourth down. Fuhrey broke a 67-yard run on Wyalusing’s first play after the fourth down and then capped the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to give Wyalusing a 30-0 lead with one second left in the first half. Dake added a 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to push the lead to 38-0. In the fourth quarter, Cina connected twice with Rohan, including a 25-yard touchdown pass for Montrose. “Our kids have to pick themselves back up,” Montrose coach Steve Miller said. “We live and learn and we move on. That’s all you can do.” Contact the writer: hsmith@timesshamrock.com
