SMIDGE WITH MIDGE: Burns Night celebration, oyster roast, Mardi Gras coming up
Always glad when storefronts get filled again
In early February, the spot where Prestige Appliance was located on Whiskey Road near Target will have a fine new store. Dover Saddlery has been in business for decades, appealing to the equestrians of our area. Nice to have it near Tractor Supply too. For more information, visit doversaddlery.com. Then, Metro Diner with their excellent reputation will be open on Jan. 13, where Atlantic Bread Company had been. They will be open from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. Call 803-594-3541 for reservations. Great additions to our community! And, next up is former Trios spot in The Alley, rumored to be an upcoming Irish Gastropub. Nightlife in The Alley is great!
Fun new Christmas ‘toys’
Two Christmas items which have delivered more than advertised thus far are the Echo Dot and the smallest Air Fryer. If you have Amazon Prime, there is no additional charge each month for using Echo, to my surprise, unless you decide as I did to subscribe to their incredible music library, at $3.99 a month, with the first month free. Of course, you buy the unit, but they do not cost very much. Alexa can provide daily games, facts and a host of responses, always politely given. Then, the Air Fryer has been great for guilt-free veggie prep, easy to use and clean.
Paladin presents musical review reminder
Jan. 14 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church, 125 Pendleton St. S.W., Paladin Productions presents their annual music review, this time having solicited suggested favorites from their fans. Tickets are $12 in advance or $15 at the door. Proceeds benefit ACTS (Area Churches Together Serving) programs. Burns Night celebration
Celebrate the great Scottish Bard Robbie Burns’ birthday with a formal dinner, music and commemorative toasts on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 6 p.m. at Newberry Hall, 117 Newberry St. S.W., downtown Aiken. Activities include a parade of tartans, a time of remembering those who have passed on this year, and a ceilidh afterwards. Yes, there will be whiskey and haggis! Tri-Development Center hosts oyster roast
On January 24, 2019, the public is invited to purchase tickets to the annual Oyster Roast/Barbecue fundraiser for Tri-Development. It is at the Big Red Barn on Chime Bell Road, from 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $45.00 each and must be purchased in advance by calling 803-642-8812. You can also contact Joan Lioi@aikentdc.org. The funds from this event will be used to renovate the workshop at the Aiken location. TDC serves individuals with intellectual disabilities, autism, and those who have had a head or spinal cord injury. The workshop needs a total renovation. Through this event, the TDC is hoping to create an awareness of their need. It is a fun way to gather with generous friends for a delicious meal in a unique setting, while doing a good thing for this incredible Aiken resource.

On Saturday, Feb. 9, at 6 p.m., there will be live music, creole cuisine, Abita beer and lots of levity downtown at Mardi Gras. They are looking for volunteers, so contact Aiken Downtown Development Association to see how you might be able to help! Cal 803-649-2221.

She has additional sessions as well, at $150 for the five sessions and, a mini session starting in March, if a later date works better for you.
