Karen M. DeGroot

Karen Marie DeGroot passed away Thursday morning, Jan. 26, 2017, at Hillside Manor in Beaver Dam.

She was born July 18, 1944, at home near Chatfield, Minnesota, to Robert Bornfleth and Ida Crowson (Bornfleth-Stremcha). She married John Sidney DeGroot in the town of Garden Valley on Nov. 6, 1964, and lived in Madison, Windsor, Rio and Fall River. She worked for General Telephone. She owned and operated Karen’s Kafe in Rio for many years. After selling Karen’s Kafe she went to work at the Famous Footwear distribution center in Sun Prairie. She was an avid Packers fan and attended several games. She and John enjoyed traveling the country in their two RVs, especially the Smoky Mountain area.

She is survived by her husband; mother; sons, Terry (Wendy), Cannon Falls Minnesota, Craig (Ellen), Stem, North Carolina, and Stacy, Columbus; sisters, Deanne (Tom) Booth, Reeseville, Virginia (Joe) Hanilf, Waynesboro, Virginia, Mary (Tom) Knoebel, Madison, Kathy Stremcha, Mauston, and Sharon (Ron) Stockfleth, Rochester Minnesota; brother, Wendell Stremcha, Rockingham, North Carolina; grandchildren, Mikaela Ritzman (Karl), Cole, Seth, Eric, Heather, Colet, Bryte. Loved by many nieces, nephews, and a large extended family.

She was preceded in death by her father, Robert L. Bornfleth; stepmother, Anne Rupkalvis (Bornfleth); and her precious brother, Robert D. Bornfleth, who passed six days before her.

Memorial services will be at noon Sunday, Jan. 29, 2017, at Grasse Funeral Home, 401 Angel Way in Rio. Lunch and time of fellowship will follow the service. Memorials in Karen’s memory may be made to the family. Grasse Funeral Service of Rio (www.grassefs.com) is serving the family.
