Man wanted in California arrested after police chase
SPRINGFIELD — Springfield police arrested a 53-year-old man wanted on felony charges in California after he allegedly attempted to flee and crashed his car during a brief chase.
Damon Rhudell Moreno faces charges of driving under the influence of intoxicants, reckless driving, attempting to elude police by vehicle and the California warrants, which have not yet been disclosed.
The incident started at 7:14 p.m. Monday, when a Springfield police officer attempted a traffic stop on Moreno’s vehicle after he made an improper lane change, police said.
Instead of pulling over, however, Moreno “accelerated heavily at the sight of the overhead police lights,” Sgt. Brian Humphreys said in a news release.
Moreno allegedly drove through a red light at Main and Mill streets, then drove west over the Springfield bridge at a high rate of speed, Humphreys said.
Once over the bridge, Moreno failed to make the curve of a roundabout and crashed through a construction barrier, Humphreys said. The vehicle rolled over on its side. Police arrested Moreno.
Moreno was taken to McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center as a precaution and then to the Lane County Jail.
Traffic was blocked for a short time during the investigation at the scene.
