Jon Huntsman, ambassador to Russia, reveals cancer diagnosis

November 1, 2018 GMT

U.S. Ambassador to Russia Jon Huntsman revealed he was diagnosed with cancer in an interview with a local paper.

“It’s just stage 1,” Mr. Huntsman told Deseret News, “So we’ll probably get it taken care of, and we’ll be fine.”

The former Utah governor said he found two black spots behind his ear and thigh earlier this year, and received the news while he was in Russia. He said he was concerned about news of his diagnosis coming out because of what the Russians could do with the information.

Doctors removed the cancerous moles and said they were a form of melanoma, Mr. Huntsman said.

Mr. Huntsman’s father died in February after battling cancer, the Deseret News reported.

Mr. Huntsman remained in his post this past summer despite a wave of critics demanding he resign after the controversial Helsinki Summit between President Trump and Russian President Putin in July.
