Landlord will pay $100k to settle asbestos lawsuit
BOSTON (AP) — A landlord who owns and operates dozens of properties in New Bedford will pay $100,000 in civil penalties to settle allegations he allowed contractors to perform illegal asbestos work on four homes he was renovating.
Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey says the consent judgment entered Wednesday in Suffolk Superior Court settles a lawsuit filed by her office in October 2012 against Ronald Oliveira.
The judgment requires Oliveira to hire a consultant to perform an audit of 20 properties selected by Healey’s office and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection to determine whether all asbestos-containing materials are being properly maintained.
Prosecutors say Oliveira’s contractors put workers and the public at risk of asbestos exposure at the four work sites between 2009 and 2013.
A phone number for Oliveira couldn’t be located.
