Killing at hotel garners 17 years
Prosecutors charged Natasha C. Reed with murder after she shot and killed the father of their 10-year-old son, who witnessed the killing in a northeast-side hotel room in April.
Allen Superior Court Judge Fran Gull sentenced Reed to 17 years in prison Wednesday after Reed pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter.
As part of a plea agreement, charges of murder and the use of a firearm during the commission of a crime were dismissed.
Gull imposed a 20-year sentence but suspended three years. She also ordered the gun used in the shooting to be destroyed and ordered Reed to undergo a mental health evaluation and treatment. Reed was given credit for 181 days in jail.
Reed, 36, was sharing a room with Allen Bolton Jr., 36, and their son at the Ramada Inn, 305 E. Washington Center Road.
About 11 p.m. April 12, Bolton and Reed were arguing when Bolton dumped the contents of a travel bag, including a handgun, on the floor. Reed picked up the gun and shot Bolton, court records stated.
“Oh my God, I killed my baby’s daddy!” she yelled, according to court documents. She immediately called 911, telling dispatchers, “I messed up. He dead.” In the background, a boy could be heard yelling, “Mommy, you are going to jail.”
The boy went into the hallway to look for help and found two women, documents said.
He told them his father was dead. When they asked him why, he told them his mom shot him, court records said.
Reed told police that when she picked up the gun, she did not know the safety was off.
She also told police that Bolton called her fat and an embarrassment and he was always mean to her.
