Akron tabbed as 1 of 6 cities on inaugural cycling tour

AKRON, Ohio – A three-race cycling event series is including Akron on its inaugural tour.

Akron is one of six cities to be featured on the Fondo Cycling Circuit USA tour. Akron’s event is Sunday, Oct. 14.

The Florida-based tour will offer cyclists three distances – 30, 50 and 75 miles – in routes that lean more recreational though timed sections will be offered. It includes a retail expo and culminates with a food truck and craft-beer festival and live music.

Routes will wind cyclists near the Cuyahoga and Tuscarawas rivers, Towpath trail, Goodyear test track and area landmarks.

“As an avid fan of biking in Akron, I’m excited to see the Fondo Cycling Circuit and all the visiting cyclists in our city,” Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan said in a release. “Local cyclists get to experience the beauty of our area all year round.”

Horrigan already is registered to ride in the race, organizers said.

This is the cycling tour’s first year; all events are on Sundays. The tour kicks off in Davidson, N.C. on Aug 5, moves to Harrisburg, Pa., Clermont, Fla., then Akron, Fredricksburg, Va., and Ridgeland, Miss. on Oct. 28.

“Becoming a bike-friendly community has been a huge focus for Akron in the last couple of years, so it’s fun to be able to capitalize on the momentum,” said Brittany Wigman, sports development strategist for Sports Alliance of Greater Akron.

Wigman said the event is “definitely” seeking volunteers; those interested can go online for details.
