Catholic school in Westerly closing at end of school year

March 21, 2018

WESTERLY, R.I. (AP) — A Roman Catholic school in Rhode Island is closing at the end of the school year because of declining enrollment and increased financial pressures.

The Diocese of Providence announced the shutdown of St. Piux X Regional Academy in Westerly on Tuesday.

The school opened in 1963 and educated students from pre-kindergarten through the eighth-grade. It currently has 118 students but a large decline in enrollment was anticipated because of the large eighth-grade class.

Bishop Thomas Tobin in a statement said the closure “is not the result of a lack of commitment or desire,” but “a reflection of the changing demographics” affecting many schools.

The diocese’s Catholic School Office will help place students at other Catholic schools and provide assistance in securing jobs for teachers and staff.
