Newtown dad’s suicide is third by a mass shooting survivor in a week

March 25, 2019

The death of Jeremy Richman marks the third suicide in a week in which the victim was connected to a mass shooting incident.

Richman, 49, was the father of Avielle Richman — a first-grader killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook tragedy. He committed suicide early Monday at Newtown Town Hall.

A week ago, Sydney Aiello, who survived the 2018 massacre at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas school in Parkland, Fla, died by suicide.

Her mother told a CNN affiliate Aiello had suffered from survivor’s guilt and been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Then on Saturday, a second student died in what police are calling “an apparent suicide.” The Miami Herald identified the student as a sophomore.

“Unfortunately, what we’ve learned is that the survivors of a traumatic event like a school shooting carry with them a lot of guilt, anxiety, pressures, depression even,” Ryan Petty, whose daughter Alaina Petty was killed in last year’s shooting, told CNN.

Carla June Hochhalter, whose daughter, Anne Marie Hochhalter, was paralyzed during the Columbine school shooting, killed herself in 1999, months after the tragedy.

Richman co-founded the Avielle Foundation to advance brain research into the roots of violence. The foundation uses community engagement, education and brain research to prevent violence and build compassion.
