Sonny Bill Williams to make rugby return in NZ
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Code-hopping star Sonny Bill Williams will return to New Zealand rugby in a National Championships match for Counties Manukau province next week, moving closer to his goal of playing for the All Blacks at next year’s Rugby World Cup.
Williams last played in the All Blacks jersey at the 2011 World Cup in New Zealand. He left immediately afterwards for a short-term rugby contract in Japan before returning to rugby league with the Roosters in Australia’s NRL competition.
Williams won the NRL title with the Roosters in 2013 but his contract ended with their elimination in the semifinals of this year’s tournament.
His appearance for the Tana Umaga-coached Counties Manukau against Auckland makes more likely Williams’ inclusion in the All Blacks team which will tour Britain in November.
