No. 8 Arkansas 70, Dayton 53

January 3, 1996

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) _ Christy Smith took what Dayton gave her Tuesday night and that meant 31 points in No. 8 Arkansas’ 70-53 victory.

``They were denying the wings so a lot of the shots were open and I took them,″ the 5-foot-6 sophomore point guard said. ``The shots were just there.″

Smith made two free throws just before the half to give Arkansas a 29-28 lead, then scored 19 in the second half.

``Christy Smith took over the game in the second half,″ Dayton coach Clemette Haskins said. ``She scored some end-to-end points that hurt us. They just wore us down.″

Shaka Massey added 14 points for Arkansas (13-1), while Kimberly Wilson had eight and was 2-for-3 from 3-point range.

``Shaka got in there and did a pretty good job, but we didn’t find her enough,″ Arkansas coach Gary Blair said.

He said Smith kept Arkansas in the game in the first half when Dayton (4-5) was putting a lot of pressure on the Lady Razorbacks.

Steph Mathu scored 14 points and Anitra Perry had 10 for Dayton.
