Bonds Reaches 400 HRs and 400 SBs

August 23, 1998

MIAMI (AP) _ Barry Bonds homered Sunday, becoming the first player in major league history to hit 400 home runs and steal 400 bases.

The milestone came in the second inning when Bonds connected off Florida’s Kirt Ojala for his 26th home run of the season.

Bonds has 400 home runs and 438 steals in a 13-year career.

Three other plays hit 300 homers and stole 300 bases _ Willie Mays (660 homers, 338 steals), Andre Dawson (436 and 314) and Bonds’ father, Bobby (332 and 461).

With one out and the bases empty, Bonds pulled a 1-1 pitch from Ojala into the right-field seats to give San Francisco a 4-0 lead. The homer traveled an estimated 390 feet.

Marlins fans gave the 34-year-old Bonds a standing ovation as he circled the bases. As he crossed home plate, Bonds tipped his cap and grinned.

Plans to honor Bonds for his achievement will be announced Monday.

``Barry Bonds is baseball’s player of the decade and the best player of his generation,″ Giants senior vice president Pat Gallagher said. ``His exclusive membership in the 400-400 club only underscores those facts.″

Bonds also hit his 300th homer against Florida on April 30, 1996, off John Burkett. He ranks 27th on baseball’s career home run list.
