People’s United gives $15,000 to breast center
A grant of $15,000 from and People’s United Community Foundation will support the Norma Pfriem Breast Center’s health education and outreach programs. The programs reach women and girls throughout Fairfield County.
The program raises awareness of breast cancer in the high risk community of Greater Bridgeport and helps women gain access to free and affordable breast exams, mammograms and other screening and diagnostic procedures at the Bridgeport Hospital-based Norma Pfriem Breast Center. Venues include community-based organizations, health fairs, businesses, local gyms, and several local high schools and colleges.
The Norma Pfriem Breast Center provides free breast cancer screening to medically underserved women to prevent early death from breast cancer. Their free care program is the largest program of its kind in the area.
Breast cancer screening increases the chance that cancer will be caught early when it is more treatable. Women in Greater Bridgeport, particularly minority and elderly women, have a high risk of early death from breast cancer.
The outreach program bridges language and cultural barriers with the help of a bilingual educator.
