Scammers targeting Nebraska and Iowa with bitcoin scam

December 12, 2017 GMT

Members of the public in Nebraska and Iowa who receive suspicious emails asking for payments in bitcoin are being asked to report it.

The FBI Omaha division said people have received emails demanding they obtain and pay in bitcoin to avoid harm to them and their family.

To protect against fraud, the FBI recommends:

* Never give out personal information to someone you did not initiate contact with.

* Before signing up for a contest or email distribution list, make sure the business has a policy to not share your information or sell it to a third party.

* Be leery of anyone you didn’t initiate contact with who asks for payment using a third party such as MoneyGram or GreenDot prepaid cards.

Individuals receiving such emails or phone calls should report crimes through the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.IC3.gov.
