Red-hot Lynx rout Mercury

August 26, 2017 GMT

ST. PAUL — Maya Moore scored 21 points, Sylvia Fowles had 14 points and 10 rebounds in three quarters and the Lynx routed Phoenix 105-69 Tuesday.

Coming off the bench, Jia Perkins scored a season-high 18 points, Natasha Howard a season-high 12 and Alexis Jones a career-high 11 for Minnesota, which made a season-best 12 shots from outside the arc to win for just the second time in five games.

Moore, who has a dozen 20-plus point games this season, scored the final six points of a 14-3 run including a buzzer-beating jumper that gave the Lynx (23-6) a 49-34 intermission lead.

A three-point play by Moore pushed the lead to 65-46 midway through the third quarter.

Jones, Minnesota’s first-round pick in this year’s draft, made the second of her three-pointers with 5:14 remaining for a 94-61 advantage.

Monique Currie led Phoenix (15-15) with 14 points, the combined total of Mercury stars Brittney Griner and Diana Taurasi.

Minnesota entered the night with a 1.5-game lead over Los Angeles for the league’s best record and home-court advantage through the playoffs.

The Lynx, 13-2 at the Xcel Energy Center, begin a three-road-games-in-eight-days stretch Friday at 7-23 San Antonio.

The trip also includes games Sunday in Los Angeles and Aug. 30 at 9-21 Indiana, a team Minnesota beat by 59 at home Friday. However, the Lynx lost by two at Indiana Aug. 6.

Fowles, limited to just four shots and seven points in Sunday’s loss at New York, dominated early and surpassed both numbers less than seven minutes into the game adding three rebounds and two blocks.

Perkins has scored in double figures twice in the past three games. She did it once in the team’s first 26 games.
