Warriors defeat Lakers 25-11 in 10U basketball season opener

Amid a blizzard of youth basketball season openers in the Deer Park Recreation League Saturday afternoon, the 10-and-under Warriors defeated the Lakers 25-11 at Fairmont Junior High.

The Warriors, playing for the second time on “Season-opening Saturday,” in the A category, made good use of a 13-0 run to separate the two teams.

Deadlocked in the early minutes at 4-4, the Warriors seized the momentum with that 13-0 surge, a surge that covered some of the first period, all of the second and the opening seconds of the third period.

Caden Dykes helped get the 13-0 rampage under way with a bucket, but it was the trio of Rome Gatlin, Andy Warrick and Brennen Rentas who allowed Warriors fans to enjoy a 15-4 intermission lead.

LaShaun Panuco’s second bucket of the game finished the 13-0 rampage.

The Lakers ended their scoring struggles when Press Wycough hit an outside jumper.

But Warrick, who led the team with seven points and did a very nice job of running the offense as the team’s point guard, scored twice in the second half, including a 3-point goal.

Mikey Perez and Caydn Deason were other boys who tried to keep the Lakers in the game by scoring buckets.

Next Saturday, the Warriors will oppose the Red Rowdies at 9:15 a.m., while the Lakers will take on the Tigers at 1:15 p.m. Both contests will be played at Fairmont Junior High.

Next weekend’s other games in the 10U-A division has the Red Rowdies opposing the Defenders at 8:15, the Hot Shots playing a doubleheader against the Defenders and Bucks, starting at 10:15, while the Bucks will oppose the Hurricanes at 12:15.
