Nicholas Guy: What family values?

March 11, 2018

The GOP has often described itself as the party of true family values like honesty, Christian and moral values. That all came crashing down when Trump ran for the presidency and was inaugurated in January 2017.

Two recent news items have appeared that so far have drawn little media attention. One horrific and another one greatly disturbing.

Last week, the ACLU filed a lawsuit to prevent the Trump administration’s authorization allowing ICE to kidnap children from their parents and hold children ransom, sometimes many miles away from their mothers, unless the mothers agree to leave this country immediately when the children are returned. This has been going on for many months, hundreds of times across this country. What country do we live in?

In November, a woman and her daughter from the Dominican Republic arrived in San Diego seeking asylum. Immigration officials determined the family was in grave danger and granted temporary asylum. About four days later, ICE arrived, detained both and separated mother from her daughter thousands of miles apart. Immigration officials made no accusations and provided no evidence that the mother was unfit to raise her daughter. Until this administration took office, it has been protocol to keep families together. Trump’s immigration policy is to prevent any immigration into the U.S., using kidnapping and ransom to discourage immigrants, legal or not.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services removed three key words from its mission statement. A “nation of immigrants” was dropped and a new phrase added in part “securing the homeland and honoring our values.”

Trump’s values do not honor the values that immigrants have brought to this country. Immigrants are being erased from our history. Our diverse nation was forged by the indigenous people, by slaves and by immigrants. America’s promise as a nation of immigrants is being erased.

So where are the GOP family values? This administration’s racism and xenophobia is a grave injustice. You can try to delete history, but history is already being written by historians.

Where are the GOP family values here?
