WinterFest returns to La Porte

La PORTE — The City of La Porte Park and Recreation Department has released the WinterFest 2018 schedule of events which will be held throughout the City of La Porte and La Porte County the weekend of Jan. 26 to 28.

Event statuses will be posted on the City of La Porte Park and Recreation Department’s website www.cityoflaporte.com and Facebook page.

Jan. 26

Ice Sculpture Demonstrations FREE!

4 to 7 p.m.

Downtown La Porte

Ice, ice, baby! Our downtown sidewalks will transform into a frozen art gallery at Plaza 618. The theme this year is Celebrate La Porte! Enjoy the creative designs as you peruse the offerings at local shops and enjoy a hearty meal at one of the local restaurants! Presented by Downtown La Porte and local businesses.


Jan. 27

Family Ceramics

9 a.m to noon

La Porte Civic Auditorium

Decorate a project in time for Valentine’s Day, Groundhog Day, Lincoln’s Birthday or any other holiday celebrated in late winter. This entertaining activity provides a great opportunity for a family outing. Please call the Park office at 326-9600 to register with your credit card.

“Snowball Softball” Adult Coed Tournament

9 a.m.

Lions Field

Dashing through the snow, turning double plays! Get your team together for our version of the “hot stove” league. Double-elimination tournament; limited to the first eight teams to register. Pre-registration required.

Breakfast with the Birds FREE!

9:30 to 11 a.m.

Luhr County Park Nature Center

Come enjoy breakfast treats while watching birds grab a bite at the bird feeders. No pre- registration required. This program is open to all ages; however, children must be accompanied by an adult. Presented by La Porte County Parks

Barre Class FREE! (Donations accepted)

11 a.m. to noon.

La Porte Civic Auditorium—Lower Level (use Plain Street ramp)

Move those winter blues away! No dance background required! If you are staying on top of fitness trends, you know that barre workouts which are designed to give you a long, lean dancer-like physique, are all the rage! Come and join certified instructor Becca Masters for a new type of workout! This class is FREE to all who attend! Donations will graciously be accepted to support the La Porte Park and Recreation Department’s Youth Scholarship Program.

Feeling the winter blahs? Susan Taylor is ready to help increase your flexibility, rebalance the body, relieve pain and scar tissue in joints and muscles. This is a gentle, safe, low-impact workout that is respectful to the body. This class is FREE to all who attend! Donations will graciously be accepted to support the La Porte Park and Recreation Department’s Youth Scholarship Program.

Polar Plunge

Cummings Lodge

Take the plunge for Deeker and Clarke Park! Participants must register in advance (by Jan. 19) by making a $100 donation online at www.uflc.net/funds/contribute-online/decamps-band-of- brothers-fund or by check at the Park Department. Not into freezing cold water? Consider chipping in to sponsor a brave friend. Participants can warm up after the plunge with refreshments, including hot chocolate, by the fire in Cummings Lodge!

Community Snow Angel Gathering FREE!

Behind Cummings Lodge in Soldiers Memorial Park

How many people can we join in one place to make snow angels simultaneously? Let’s find out! Tell your neighbors! Bring a friend! Come one, come all! Bring back your childhood memory of playing in the snow!

Family Beach Day FREE!

Stone Lake Beach — Soldiers Memorial Park

Going to the beach in the middle of winter? Sure, it is WinterFest! We are planning an afternoon of family ‘beach’ activities immediately following the snow angel gathering. Bring your beach pail and shovel to build a “sand” castle, participate in a volleyball game, tug-of-war, Frisbee golf, limbo, “parachute” game (beach ball with blanket), fly a kite, or play hopscotch! Warning: these activities may trigger squeals of fun and laughter! Hot chocolate will be available at the beach house.

Horse Drawn Wagon Rides FREE!

1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Cummings Lodge

Jingle, jingle, jingle. Take a brisk ride through the beauty of wintry nature while enjoying the majesty of the equine. After a trot through Soldiers Memorial Park, warm up with a cup of hot chocolate by the fireplace.

Wheel Throwing Pottery Demonstration FREE!

2 to 3 p.m.

La Porte Civic Auditorium— Lower Level (use Plain Street ramp)

The art of wheel throwing is both a therapeutic and expressive way to create pottery. Join Alayna Bublitz, a local artist who teaches the La Porte Park and Recreation Department’s pottery classes, while she demonstrates her talent and answers questions from those in attendance. Individuals will have the opportunity to sit at a wheel and get their hands dirty! Maybe you will hear ‘Unchained Melody’ playing in the background
