Spring brings downtown construction
As the old movie cliche goes: Theyyy’rrree back.
Construction crews raced the oncome of winter to complete the driving lanes and parking aprons along Fourth Street in David City. Orange construction cones became winter ornaments along the areas that remained unfinished, but those ornaments be joined by a lot more orange very soon.
The past few weeks, crews from VanKirk and Sons have been installing underground water mains downtown, but soon, the excavators will be back, along with pavement machines and concrete haulers.
Designers with Leo A Daly of Omaha have been talking to property owners about the start up of street construction. As all construction, it depends on the weather. In all eight more blocks of downtown will see concrete and brick installation this year.
“It sounds like construction will begin on Monday, March 26 on E Street between Third and 4th Streets. At that time Constructors will complete the remaining sidewalks on Fourth streets as well. Van Kirk has been working on the water main on D Street between 5th and 6th streets too as well,” said Jon McCarville of Leo A Daly.
McCarville said that on the first block of E Street work, crews will remove the entire street rather than doing one half at time. By rebuilding it all, including storm runoff drainage taking water east, the block will be completed sooner, McCarville said.
At the corner of Fifth and E streets, crews from VanKirk and Sons of Sutton have removed old coal bins made of brick that date back to the early 20th century.
Constructors Inc. of Lincoln is the main contractor for the combined $9 million project that encompassed rebuilding seven blocks of Nebraska 15 and a complete renovation of streets and underground infrastructure on 11 blocks of downtown David City. The design firm for the project is Leo A Daly of Omaha. The completion date is Dec. 1, 2018.
