Letter: Happy birthday Mort Walker (and ‘Beetle Bailey’)

September 5, 2017 GMT

To the editor,

My good friend, Mort Walker, the creator of “Beetle Bailey,” turned 94 Sunday — a new turn on the meaning of Labor Day.

He’s very active, still doing the strip and playing regular golf! I made the attached birthday card for him. He is a national monument.

Artist John Newcomb lives in Norwalk and is a former Stamford resident. He and Walker wrote the book “Mind Control: Think Your Way to Better Health and Happiness.” Walker, who lives in Stamford, launched “Beetle Bailey” on Sept. 4, 1950. It is the longest-running strip drawn by its original creator in the history of comics.
