Bay State Dems Join Chorus Demanding Complete Access

April 19, 2019

LOWELL -- Bay State politicians joined Democrats around the nation in calls for further explanation and full access to the report by special counsel Robert Mueller and his team following the release of the redacted version Thursday.

U.S. Rep. Lori Trahan, a Democrat representing the Massachusetts 3rd Congressional District, called U.S. Attorney General William Barr’s handling of the Mueller report and March 24 summary “partisan.”

“The Attorney General of the United States is not the president’s personal defense attorney, but you wouldn’t know that based on Mr. Barr’s performance today,” she wrote in a statement.

She called for Mueller to provide public testimony before Senate and the House of Representatives in order to restore public trust in the handling of the investigation. U.S. Sen. Edward Markey of Massachusetts made a similar request.

“We need to hear from Special Counsel Robert Mueller,” Markey wrote in a press release. “He should testify to both the Senate and House and explain his report to the American people.”

U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton, a Democrat representing Massachusetts’s 6th District, said congress should “focus its oversight” of President Trump’s administration in the name of national security.

“Every American, whether we support the president or not, should want to know why Vladimir Putin and Russia worked so hard to get President Trump elected” Moulton wrote in a press release. “That unmistakable conclusion of the report is the real threat to our nation.”

Democrat and U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern, representing Massachusetts 2nd District, called for the resignation of Barr, who he called Trump’s “personal attorney and partisan attack dog.” Both he and U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a presidential candidate, also said congress must get the full, unredacted report.

“Donald Trump has repeatedly dismissed Russia’s attack on our elections and our democracy,” McGovern said. “As the Mueller report has laid bare, he has repeatedly attempted to obstruct justice.”

Warren tweeted a petition calling for Mueller to testify before congress and to see the full, unredacted report Thursday.
