‘I think Hue Jackson is a great dude’ – Steelers players react to Browns firing of coach

November 20, 2018 GMT

Perhaps it’s because they went 5-0-1 against him while he had the job, but the Pittsburgh Steelers expressed remorse that Hue Jackson was fired as head coach of the Cleveland Browns on Monday.

“It’s not a good thing. I think Hue Jackson is a great dude,” center Maurkice Pouncey said. “He’s a good coach. They had four overtime games (this season) that could have went the other way. I guess that’s sometimes how the stick falls, but it sucks for him obviously.”

Jackson became the sixth consecutive Browns coach to be fired following a loss to the Steelers, all since 2008 - although each of the previous ones were after a season finales and technically in the offseason. Jackson was 3-36-1 since he took over in 2016, but two of those victories and the tie happened through eight games this season.

Former Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley was also fired by the Browns, who have lost their past three.

“I hope everything goes well,” Steelers defensive end Stephon Tuitt said of Jackson and Haley. “They are good coaches.”

Not counting interims (Gregg Williams took over the reins Monday), Cleveland will soon be hiring their ninth coach in the 20 seasons since they returned to the NFL in 1999 after a three-season absence.

The Steelers, of course, have had three coaches since 1969.

“In general I’m blessed to be here and I’ll always (feel) blessed to be here,” Tuitt said.

Pouncey expressed similar sentiments.

“I just feel like when you stick with someone for a while, eventually things will turn around and great things will happen,” he said. “In the NFL... you can’t come in and get rid of 53 players and think you’re going to be successful. It takes time to build a great organization.”
