Count Allowed in Marijuana Vote

September 18, 1999

WASHINGTON (AP) _ A U.S. District Court judge on Friday ruled that the District of Colombia has the right to count votes from a referendum held last November on whether to legalize marijuana for medical uses.

But the ruling by Judge Richard Roberts was moot, coming a day after the Senate approved a new D.C. budget allowing the vote tally. Vote counting for the referendum, held last November, had been blocked by Rep. Bob Barr, R-Ga., in last year’s budget.

The Senate this year voted to allow the city to determine the results, but also prohibited use of the drug regardless of the outcome.
