Prep Boys Basketball: Martinez leads South Umpqua past Lakeview, 77-65

SUTHERLIN — Junior point guard Chris Martinez scored 25 points as South Umpqua defeated Lakeview, 77-65, Friday in the third annual Bill Spelgatti Invitational at the Dog Pound.

Martinez had nine points in both the first and fourth quarters, helping the Class 4A Lancers (1-1) notch their first win of the season. Dylan McFadden added 14 points, while Matt Lee and William Wylie each scored nine.

Jalen Lampman scored a game-high 31 points for the 3A Honkers (0-2).

“The kids just played looser today,” said S.U. first-year coach Brett Nixon, whose team dropped a 58-21 decision to Sutherlin Wednesday. “They got the first-game jitters out the way. We shot really well.”

The Lancers will play St. Mary’s of Medford at 3:45 p.m. Saturday to conclude the tournament.
