Goodyear’s Wingfoot Three airship takes first flight (photos)

MOGADORE, Ohio – The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. recently brought its new airship, Wingfoot Three, out of the hangar for its first flight at the Wingfoot Lake Hangar, 841 Wingfoot Lake Road, Mogadore.

Ground tests were scheduled for Thursday, June 21, and the first flight took place Monday, June 25.

Although the new airship looks similar to the company’s emblematic GZ20 blimps that have flown since 1969, it’s actually a semi-rigid zeppelin. The airships are longer, faster and can hold more passengers than the company’s retired GZ20 blimps. The airships also feature an internal framework made of aluminum and carbon-fiber trusses, which the GZ20s lacked.

It’s the third such airship for the company, which has Wingfoot One in operation in Pompano Beach, Florida, and Wingfoot Two in Carson, California.
