4 local teams advance at sectional cross country

October 10, 2016 GMT

Southwestern and Shawe’s boys and Switzerland County and Madison’s girls - plus five local individuals - all punched their tickets to the Brown County Regional with strong showings at the IHSAA Southwestern Cross Country Sectional held Saturday at Hanover College. Jennings County swept the sectional team competition with wins in both the boys and girls races while New Washington’s Olivia Graebe (19:57.4) and Silver Creek’s Mathew Bottorff (16:23.5) won individual championships. Graebe, a senior, scored her win over runner-up Leah Anders, a sophomore from Switzerland County who finished about 50 seconds back at 20:42.5 in the girls 5,000-meter race. Bottorff, also a senior, defeated Cameron Stephens, his teammate and the defending sectional champion by about 50 yards as Stephens finished in 16:28.1 to give Silver Creek a 1-2 punch. “It would have been nice to win but I’ve never beaten her and I knew that she’d probably win today,” Anders said of Graebe. “I was just trying to get away from the girls behind me. “I’m happy with it,” Anders said of her performance. “It was kind of tough today. The wind was making it tough and just having to run by myself with no one around me and pushing me, that was tough.” With the top five teams advancing as well as the top 10 runners from non-advancing teams there was still plenty to run for by the rest of the field. Southwestern’s boys ran fourth with 134 points and Shawe Memorial’s boys ran fifth with 148 points as both punched their second-straight ticket to the regional - just the second time in history for the Hilltoppers. Switzerland County’s girls finished fourth with 107 points while Madison’s girls claimed the final advancing spot in fifth place with 137 points. While Madison’s boys failed to qualify for regional as a team, senior Will Monroe placed 18th overall in 17:35.7 to stand third among runners from teams not advancing. And while Southwestern and Shawe’s girls came up short as teams, Taylor Cole (23:25.2) Michaela Mahoney (23:37.9) and Caty Battjes (25:18.3) all made it out as individuals for Southwestern while Lauren Lundergan (25:26.4) will advance for Shawe. “This is far and away the strongest team Shawe has fielded in my 15 years here, with only five runners everyone has had to perform at every meet,” coach Jim Leveille said. “Coaches Andy Livorno, Gary Maas and I are extremely proud of their accomplishments and truly enjoyed this season. They earned this success. ” Our ladies all ran their best times of the season today, you can’t ask for better than that,” Leveille added. The Brown County Regional is Saturday at Eagle Park. Runners from the Southwestern and Brown County sectionals will compete there for a spot in the Brown County Semistate at the same site on Oct. 11 when the field will expand to including teams from feeder regional at Bedford North Lawrence, Brown County, Crawford County and Pike Central. --- IHSAA Southwestern Hanover Cross Country Sectional 28 Saturday, Oct. 8 at Hanover College Boys Teams (Top 5 teams qualify for regional) 1.
