Good Samaritans Killed on Highway

December 18, 2000

SPRINGFIELD, Minn. (AP) _ Two men who stopped to push a stranded motorist out of a snowdrift were struck from behind by another car and killed.

Loren Batalden, 52, and Bradley Heilman, 29, stopped around 12:35 p.m. Saturday during whiteout conditions to help a 17-year-old driver on Highway 14.

They were killed when they were struck by a car driven by Thomas Ladwig, 36, who didn’t see them until it was too late to stop.

``They were just being good Samaritans trying to help this young man out,″ State Patrol spokesman Tim Boyer said.

Ladwig and the 17-year-old were not injured.

No charges were filed against Ladwig.
